NOCDC Announces Advisory Board

The New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council, under the direction of President Machelle Lee Hall, is pleased to announce its recently-formed advisory board. The advisory board is composed of outstanding community members tasked with providing recommendations, wisdom, knowledge and experience to assist the Board of Directors and the organization itself in support of the organization's primary mission to promote citizen diplomacy - the notion that the individual citizen can help shape U.S. foreign relations "one handshake at a time."  NOCDC Advisory Board members include: Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne; Patricia Denechaud, Honorary Consul of Canada; Patricia Gay, Executive Director, Preservation Resource Center; Dr. E. Ralph Lupin, Honorary Consul of Romania; Maestro Robert Lyall, New Orleans Opera; N.O. City Councilmember Kristin Palmer; Jeffrey Stacey, U.S. Department of State; and Sean Wilson, Head of School, International School of Louisiana.

African Delegation visits Louisiana Supreme Court LA Supreme Court

On June 22, twelve African visitors studying "Transparency and Good Governance" in the U.S. visited the Louisiana Supreme Court. Mr. Robert Gunn, Community Relations Projects Coordinator and Website Coordinator, provided the group with a tour of the court where they also viewed the historic documents on display. Ms. Valerie S. Willard, Deputy Judicial Administrator, coordinated the group's visit to the court, which provided them with an opportunity to learn about and discuss court proceedings.

Share Your Heart and Home with a Foreign Exchange Student!

Every year, more than 900 foreign exchange students spend a year or a semester studying at American high schools through the PAX-Program of Academic Exchange. These extraordinary young people look forward to attending local high schools and living like American teens with an American host family while improving their English language skills and sharing their heritage with their adopted communities. PAX is currently seeking host families who would be interested in participating in this remarkable cultural exchange program and helping these students achieve their dreams.

Since 1990, PAX, an educational non-profit foundation, has supported thousands of exchange students from over 40 countries. All PAX students are between the ages of 15 and 18, speak English, have full insurance coverage and come with their own spending money. Although students choose to study in the US for a variety of reasons, all look forward to making life-long friendships and creating unforgettable memories. Phillip, a 16 year old from Bonn says, "I love the American countryside and the American attitude, which is so nice and amenable." He adds, "I consider the decision to become an exchange student to be my greatest accomplishment."

PAX welcomes host families of all kinds who would like to share their heart, home and culture with a young person from Germany, Korea, Sweden, China, France, Mexico or any one of our international students. Host families are asked to provide students with meals, a place to sleep and study, and a warm, supportive environment.  Private rooms are not required and single parents, young couples and retirees are all welcome to host. "The rewards of hosting are certainly not monetary, but we have become so rich through these experiences," say the DeWitt family of Minnesota.  "What we have gained has been amazing: a daughter for life!" For more information about becoming a host family with PAX-Program of Academic Exchange, call or email local PAX Coordinator Nathalie Bastin at 504-361-0736 / nati1965@yahoo.com or the PAX national office at 800-555-6211. IVLP visitors meet with Judge Helen G. Berrigan Judge Helen Berrigan

On June 21, six Moldovan visitors studying "Riot Control and Critical Infrastructure/Key Resource Protection" visited The Honorable Helen G. Berrigan, Section C - Judge of the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Louisiana. About a week before, on June 13, Judge Berrigan also met with three Kurdish judges from Iraq and spent the day examining court administration, the role of the clerks and court proceedings. The Moldovan visitors valued the meeting and dialogue that illuminated the federal judicial system, capital punishment views, credibility issues of police testimony in jury trials, and police corruption trials. Discussions of recent trials also functioned as an up-to-date illustration of the finer points of the judicial process.
