African Women Leaders meet with Plaquemines D.A.
On June 10, a group of 11 African women leaders met with Plaquemines Parish District Attorney, Mr. Charles J. Ballay, and his staff to discuss the office's efforts in addressing and prosecuting cases of domestic violence.  The delegates asked many legal questions and were impressed by the one-stop service center available to those seeking help. Ms. Mary Jane Tesvich, Domestic Violence Coordinator, explained how the office collaborates with police and the nearby counseling center to assist victims.  The group also visited the courtroom and met with Assistance District Attorney, Ms. Mary Slavich Touzet, to discuss how juvenile offenses are handled in Plaquemines Parish.  Following the court visit, the women made a stop at the counseling center where they shared issues victims of domestic violence face in their countries with the center's staff.
Visitors from Latin America Study Sustainable Urban Development
On July 20, a Latin American group of eight urban developers and environmentalists met with La Toya Cantrell, President of Broadmoor Improvement Association, to discuss the rebuilding efforts of the neighborhood since Hurricane Katrina.  Ms. Cantrell explained the demographics of Broadmoor and some of the issues residents have been faced with while trying to rebuild their homes.  She also discussed the measures taken by the association to rebuild the neighborhood in a more sustainable way by raising houses off the ground.  The visitors were impressed by Cantrell's dedication to getting Broadmoor back on its feet and her team's hard work in the rebuilding efforts.
