Arabic Classes at NOCDC start September 13!
Beginning
on September 13, the New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council and the
Institute of Critical languages & Cultural
Exchange, Inc. are pleased to offer Beginning Arabic classes. The
intensive ten-week session will be held on Mondays from
5:00-7:30 p.m. at the NOCDC offices at 1215
Prytania Street, in Suite 203. Classes will meet once a week for 2.5
hours from September 13 through November 15. Additional
training is available with the professor via Skype. The
professional instructor is a native speaker who offers a
proficiency-based
curriculum. The cost: $350 for tuition and
materials. (Counselor-level NOCDC members receive a 20% discount.) The
pre-registration and pre-payment deadline is September 7. Mail checks

African Women Leaders meet with Plaquemines D.A.
On
June 10, a group of 11 African women leaders met with Plaquemines
Parish District Attorney, Mr. Charles J. Ballay, and his staff to
discuss the office's efforts in addressing and prosecuting cases of
domestic
violence. The delegates asked many legal questions and were
impressed by
the one-stop service center available to those seeking help. Ms. Mary
Jane
Tesvich, Domestic Violence Coordinator, explained how the office
collaborates
with police and the nearby counseling center to assist victims.
The group also visited the courtroom and met with Assistance District
Attorney, Ms. Mary Slavich Touzet, to discuss how juvenile offenses are
handled
in Plaquemines Parish. Following the court visit, the women made a
stop
at the counseling center where they shared issues victims of domestic
violence
face in their countries with the center's staff.

Visitors from Latin America Study Sustainable Urban Development
On July 20, a Latin American group
of eight urban developers and environmentalists met with La Toya Cantrell,
President of Broadmoor Improvement Association, to discuss the rebuilding
efforts of the neighborhood since Hurricane Katrina. Ms. Cantrell explained
the demographics of Broadmoor and some of the issues residents have been faced
with while trying to rebuild their homes. She also discussed the measures
taken by the association to rebuild the neighborhood in a more sustainable way
by raising houses off the ground. The visitors were impressed by
Cantrell's dedication to getting Broadmoor back on its feet and her
team's hard work in the rebuilding efforts.

Adnan Suleman joins NOCDC staffAdnan
Suleman, a recent graduate of Tulane University, has joined the NOCDC staff as
the new Program Officer. Mr. Suleman replaced Kathryn Dickerson, who left the
NOCDC to complete her Master's in Geography at the University of New Orleans.
Prior to joining the NOCDC, Mr. Suleman worked for Organizing for America and interned with the
Loyola Law Clinic, Students for Barack Obama, and the World Affairs Council of
New Orleans. Mr. Suleman has a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and he
speaks fluent Urdu.
