NOCDC Arabic classes to continue in 2011
Arabic Following the success of the beginning Arabic classes held by NOCDC this fall, two Arabic classes will be offered in 2011. Instructor Dr. Najoua Hotard, a native of Tunisia, will continue her diligent work with students during class and independently via Skype and on the phone to accelerate the students' pronunciation and comprehension. Starting in mid-January beginning Arabic (for those with no previous training) will be offered on Monday evenings and intermediate Arabic (a continuation for those who took the class this fall) will be offered on Wednesday evenings. In addition, NOCDC is pleased to announce that Ines Sigel will conduct a beginning German class in 2011. Details on both the Arabic and German classes to follow soon.
English Language Educators visit St. Paul's
Educators

On October 6 a multi-regional group of 25 English teachers visited St. Paul's Episcopal School in Lakeview to learn about language courses in American schools.  The group was welcomed by the administration, teachers and parents for an introduction and overview before visiting classrooms.  Charleen Schwank, Principal of the Lower School, talked about the destruction caused by the flooding following Hurricane Katrina and the group watched a video of St. Paul's rebuilding that brought many to tears.  Following the introduction the visitors were split into groups for classroom visits and observations.  During recess the students sang songs for the group and the visitors signed the school's Peace Arch in the courtyard.  The group was very impressed by the school's quality of teaching and the parents' involvement in their children's education.  One visitor noted "it was the best place I've been to!  The children are motivated!  The teachers are brilliant!"

The exchange of knowledge worked both ways as the visitors talked about the school system in Nigeria, the training programs in Egypt, and the difficulties learning to write in English in Ecuador.  St. Paul's students were very excited to learn first-hand how to write "welcome" in Arabic, admire a beautiful hijab, and receive a card from a Chinese teacher.

NOCDC thanks Merry Sorrells, Head of School, and Lisa Davis, Director of Institutional Advancement, as well as all of the teachers, students, and parents who made the visit such a wonderful experience.

Murrow Journalists meet with Ms. Felicia Kahn
Ms. Kahn's visitOn November 3, 12 visitors participating in the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists visited New Orleans to learn more about local news coverage and politics, along with civic participation and grassroots activism.  One of their meetings included a visit to a long time member of the NOCDC, Ms. Felicia Kahn, in her home for a discussion of local politics and the recent mid-term elections. The discussion ranged from the dynamics of Louisiana politics to the visitors' general impressions of the city. NOCDC thanks Ms. Kahn for her willingness to meet with the visitors and for sharing her knowledge of local issues.
